I. Introduction
This User Guide is designed to help you in using the Naxos Music Library (NML) website.  It consists of tips and tools that help you maximize use of your NML subscription.

II. What is Naxos Music Library (NML)?
Naxos Music Library is the World’s largest Classical music listening service designed for students, instructors and patrons of public and academic libraries, as well as players and executives of orchestras. Our collection of over 140,000 tracks of music is continually growing, not only from our own label but from other leading independent labels. Our collection is benchmarked against the development suggestions outlined in the Music Library Association’s A Basic Music Library. NML has simple and advanced searching, common (non-proprietary) software requirements, and extensive background information such as complete liner notes.

III. Accessing NML

a) How do I access NML?

Before getting started, coordinate with your Naxos representative to get the following information:

• URL to Naxos Music Library
• Your login ID and password, if any.

We offer mechanisms that allow you to control who should be given access to NML for institutional subscriptions.  Below are the options. You may also check the “Service version” section of your service agreement for the option your institution has selected.

IP Authentication

If you selected “IP Authentication”, we will give you a unique URL which you can access directly or from links on your library/institution webpage. The URL will be in the format of http://xxx.NaxosMusicLibrary.com. NML will allow access only to those IP addresses provided by your organization.

Referring URL

If you selected “Referring URL”, you will receive a unique URL in the format of http://xxx.NaxosMusicLibrary.com. You will have customized URLs (Referral URLs) that will link to your unique URL. This means that NML will check the URL of incoming browser requests, and grant access only if the incoming URL matches one of those listed in your “My Account” page in the NML website.  The Referral URL is entered into the appropriate field in the “My Account” page for the institution as shown in Figure 3.1 below.

If you chose “Both”, this means that an institution may want to authenticate by IP addresses for computers within the institution’s area, and authenticate with Referral URL for computers accessing to them remotely. In Figure 3.1 above, the Authorize button indicates what sort of authentication an institution has. You can see that there are three options: “IP authorized,” “Refer URL” and “Both.” This subscription is set for “Both.”

Password authentication

If you chose “password authentication”, you will only need the login/password data given to you to log-on to NML.

Please note that your URL, login and password are included in the email confirmation that you received from your Naxos representative which contains details about the service.

b) What do I need to access NML?

Below are the minimum requirements for you to connect to NML:

• Internet connection and audio-enabled computers with the following:
  
  

  PC user:
  MS Windows XP with
  o   MS IE 7 / Mozilla 1.7.1 / FireFox 1.5 / Netscape 7.1
  o   Media Player 10 / 11
  (MS IE setting: Privacy = Medium, Security = Medium-Low, Cookies = Accept All, Pop-up Blocker = Off; Sound setting = No Sound)
  
  Mac user:
  OS X 10.4 with
  o   Mozilla 1.7.12 / FireFox 1.5 / Netscape 7.2 / Safari 2.0.2
  o   Media Player 9
  (Browser settings: Cookies = Always Accept; Pop-up Blocker = Off; Rosetta = Yes)

• If you are using another operating system, browser or media player that is not listed above, please contact your Naxos representative for set-up assistance.
• Note to librarians/administrators: If your want your users to access the service remotely, your proxy service must be able to handle media streams.

c) User Categories in NML

Note that there are four user categories in NML. Each category has its corresponding user access rights.

• Administrator 
  The Administrator can view the account details of the university/library via the ‘My Account’ link located on the top right corner. From the ‘My Account’ page, the Administrator can change account details (such as the time-out duration, IP addresses and Referring URLs), view usage statistics and obtain static URLs.  The Administrator can also manage the playlists.  The Administrator’s capabilities are discussed further in “Section IX – What can an administrator do?”.
  
  
• Instructor/Professor
  A user logging in with the Professor password can create playlists. Please note that “Professor” and “Instructor” will be used in this guide interchangeably.
  
  
• Librarian
  The Librarian can view usage statistics but will not be able to view NML content or listen to music. The only page available is My Account.  For this reason, use of the Librarian password does not occupy a user space (user count) in your NML account – you can log in with this password even if all of your purchased user spaces are full.
  
  
• Student
  The Student can view NML content and listen to music.  Students can not create their own playlists.

d) Logging in to NML with a Username/Password

1. Go to www.NaxosMusicLibrary.com and type in your given username and password, as shown on Figure 3.2. Successful login will bring you to the screen depicted in Figure 3.3.
   
   Please note that some academic institutions may not require login to NML. They have customized URLs to Naxos Music Library, in the format of http://xxx.NaxosMusicLibrary.com. Some institutions that use referral URL authentication may have their own login rather than Naxos’ standard login shown below.  Please coordinate with the authorized personnel (librarian, instructor or director) in your organization to check on your NML access.

2. After the success message as shown in Figure 3.3, you will be automatically brought to the NML default page.  The default could either be the Browse/Search page as shown in Figure 3.4 or the Advanced Search page as shown in Figure 3.5.  The default page to be displayed will depend on what has been defined upon subscription.

IV. Searching for Music

There are three ways to look for music in NML:

a) Browse/Search

There are several ways to use the Browse/Search function as shown in Figure 4.1:

1. You can browse the entire library by Genre, from A-Z.
   
2. You can browse the Classical Music genre by Category and then alphabetically.
   
   Please note that if you're looking for works in a specific category, this may be faster than using Advanced Search.
    
3. You can search by composer by clicking on “Composers” under “Category”. Click on the letter that corresponds with the composer’s last name, and then choose the composition you're looking for from the discography.
   
   For example, to get to Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20, you would need to click Composers, then M, scroll down to find Mozart, click on it, and scroll down the page to see the list of Concertos on the right, and find Piano Concerto No. 20 from there.
   
   By using the Composers category, you can also access the composer's biography and general information about his/her works.

b) Advanced Search

The second way to find music is through the use of Advanced Search depicted in Figure 4.2.

You may fill in as few or as many fields as you like but you don't have to complete all. If you need help finding a search term, you may click on the magnifying glass icon to view the choices you have. 

Advanced Search is recommended for searching excerpts from complete works (e.g. arias from operas, individual works from larger cycles, etc.).

For example, you can search for German music of the Romantic period, by typing “Germany” in the Country and “Romantic” in the Period.  One could also search for all the piano music composed in France between 1850 and 1920 by entering “Piano” in the Instrument, “France” in the Country and “1850” and “1920” in the From and To of the Year Composed.  A user who is looking for music that reflects a certain emotion or situation can use the Moods and Scenarios.

The search results will appear alphabetically by repertoire.  

c) Keyword Search

Keyword Search can be found in the Browse/Search page and the Advanced Search page.  Just enter the keyword(s) into the search box and click Search.  This is good to use if you are looking for a specific album or repertoire title.

V. Listening to Music

Listening to music is the main purpose for your institution’s subscription to NML. To listen to music:

1. When you find the music you are looking for in the search facility, click on the title of the CD you want to play. A new window, as shown in Figure 5.1, will appear which contains the track list, CD cover and control buttons of the player.
   
2. You may select just a few tracks by clicking on the individual boxes or click on the “Select All” button to play entire CD.
   
3. Click “Play Selections”. The player will open below the CD cover image.
   
4. You may use the player to play, stop, pause, fast-forward or back-up tracks. Please note, however, that the availability of player buttons depends on the operating system and the browser you are using. The “fast forwarding” is disabled in Macintosh for some browsers (i.e. Netscape and Opera). 
   
5. While listening, you may also read the liner notes by clicking on “About this Recording”. 
   
6. Media Player defaults to the highest quality of streaming you subscribed for.  Sound quality higher than your subscription is disabled.
• “CD” refers to a sound quality of 128kbps; broadband required.
• “Near CD” refers to a sound quality of 64kbps; broadband or DSL / ISDN required.
• “FM” refers to a sound quality of 20kbps; suitable for a dial-up connection.
  
  If the music is being streamed intermittently, you may not have adequate bandwidth, thus you may need to change to a lower sound quality.  To change the sound quality while listening to the music:
  
  a)    Stop the music using the player control.
  b)    Click the new sound quality tab, which will then turn red (See Figure 5.1).
  c)     Click “Play Selections”
  
  Clicking the “Play” [ ►] icon in the Windows Media Player box will not make the change.
  
  The new setting will remain in effect until you log out of NML.

VI. Creating Playlists

NML has a “create playlist” function to enable instructors to create playlists for students to listen to. Only Instructors and Administrators are allowed to create playlists.

Note that each institution will receive a special login for its instructors. This login gives access to create and edit playlists, and may be distributed at the administrator’s discretion.  Other users (not categorized as Instructors) do not see the Create/Edit Playlists option, but they can access the playlists to listen to the music (except when using the Librarian username).

a) To create playlists

1. Search for the music you want to include in the playlist.
2. Open the CD page as shown in Figure 6.1 and click on the desired track. You can click 'Select All' to add all of the tracks on the CD.
3. Click on “Add to playlist”. In the new window, a prompt will appear asking whether to add the tracks to an existing playlist or to create a new one.
4. To add to an existing playlist, select the playlist from the drop-down  menu shown in Figure 6.2. To create a new one, enter a new playlist name in the space provided.

b) To edit playlists

1. Click on the “Playlist” tab at the top menu bar.
2. Edit your playlist as needed.
3. Click “Save” at the bottom of the page.

The menu on the left side of the screen as shown in Figure 6.3 shows the listing of all the playlists that have been created for one particular institution. You may have several instructors/professors creating playlists, so we suggest that the playlist name contain instructor’s name and/or name of the class or other identifier to help students easily recognize the correct playlist.

VII. Logging out

To log off, click on the red “Log Out” button as shown in Figure 7.1.  Please note that clicking the "Back" button on the browser or moving to another Internet site without clicking "LOG OUT" does not constitute a complete log out.

If the above log-out procedure is not followed, you may lock up one user space/count. Each institution is only allowed to occupy a certain number of user spaces simultaneously. Once the maximum number of user spaces is occupied, subsequent attempts to connect to the NML database will be denied with the message, “The maximum number of users allowed by your institution has been reached.  Please try again later.”  Please log out properly to make sure that other users are able to access the NML.

VIII. Other Features

a) Listening while Browsing or Searching

You can listen to tracks while using Browse / Search or Advanced Search, but as soon as you click another selection, the tracks you are listening to will stop playing.

b) Browsing a Specific Category of a Chosen Genre

In a specific genre (such as Classical Music), if you pick a specific category (such as Concertos), you will be able to browse all content in that category for that genre from A to Z.  

c) Static URL to Cat No.

“Static URL” is a convenient feature that allows you to save the static URLs of your browse/search listings as additions to/links from any online teaching resource. You may copy the static URL by highlighting it and pressing “Ctrl + C”. To paste elsewhere, press “Ctrl + V”.

Please note that only institutions who have selected to use IP authentication (with a dedicated URL like http://xxx.NaxosMusicLibrary.com) are provided the static URL feature.

Static URL links can be found on the following pages:

1. Shown in Figure 8.1, below the Browse/Search listings – “Static URL to Cat No”
2. Shown in Figure 8.2, in the CD Page - “Show Static URL” option in the player (Note: This changes to “Hide Static URLs” once the URLs appear.  Clicking again will remove the static URLs from the CD page.)
3. Shown in Figure 8.3, below the Playlist page  - “Static URL to Playlist”
4. Shown in Figure 8.4, below the advance search result page - “Static URL to Repertoire”.

d) Text Search

On the far left of the screen under “Text Resources”, you can pick “Text Search” (shown in Figure 8.5) to find words or phrases on the web site.  The text search is carried out on “About This Recording” throughout the site. To use this facility:

1. Click on Text Search. 
2. On the screen that pops up, type in the text you are searching for in the query field.
3. Click Search.

The search is not case sensitive, and search for numbers is supported.  Also displayed on the Text Search screen are some rules that should be followed in doing a text search.

IX. Administrative Features

For an organization, if you have the administrator login ID, you can perform administrative functions by clicking the “My Account” icon as shown in Figure 9.1.

a) What can an Administrator do?

1. Change the administrator’s password.
   
2. Amend the NML front page, i.e. whether the opening page is the “Browse/Search” page or the “Advanced Search” page.
   
3. Update institution profile information such as phone number and address.
   
4. View details of works streamed, and other statistics with “Usage Statistic”.
   
5. Define “Time Out”. The “Time Out” parameter controls how long an idle session will take to time out, and thereby releases a user space (user count) for the institution. 
   
6. Define the access control. This is explained in “Section III – How do I Access NML?” of this user guide.
   
7. Define “Return Path”. This parameter in “My Account” allows you to designate which web page to go to after you log off Naxos Music Library. An example would be to return to the intranet of your institution. 
   
8. Define “Language”. This allows some web pages or part of a web page to be displayed in the chosen language, such as traditional Chinese.  Please note that only some functions are in your chosen language. Functions such as Advanced Search, Text Search and Playlist creation/modification are still in English.

b) Defining IP Addresses

As discussed in “Section III – How do I access NML?”, one of the access controls is IP Authentication. To define the IP Addresses, click on “My Account” which will take you to the page below.

You will see the Authorize buttons. If you do not see these buttons, please email NMLHelp@naxosusa.com if you are in the USA; for other countries, email customer.service@naxos.com.

If you have selected IP authorization for your subscription, click on EDIT and the IP maintenance page will appear. This page is used to maintain IP addresses. Entering IP addresses can be done in three ways.

1. Use of Wildcard - accepts IP addresses entered in the form of 123.123.123.*. 
   
2. IP range - accepts addresses entered in the form of 123.123.123.0 to 123.123.124.255 (in the format 123.123.123.0 - 123.123.124.255).
   
3. IP subnet with Mask - accepts IP addresses entered in the form of 123.123.123.0 with a mask.

X. Appendix

a) Online Subscription Renewal (for individual subscribers only, NOT for institutions)

You can go to “My Account” to renew your subscription.  The expiration date of your subscription is shown on the upper right corner when you log in (shown in figure 10.1).

Within 14 days prior to the expiration date of your subscription, you will be shown a link next to your expiration date.  Click on it to renew your subscription.

But you can still renew your subscription online even after it has expired.  To do this, type in your username and password in NML. Since your account will have expired, a link to renew subscription will be displayed next to the login area.  Click on it to renew your subscription.

b) Windows Media Player Proxy Settings

Below is one of the proxy settings you can set for your media player. However, it is recommended that you consult your I.T. department or ISP before applying these settings.  Naxos Digital Services Limited assumes no responsibilities for the following settings.

1. In the media player, select “Tools”-> “Option” in the main menu.
2. Click the “Network” Tab.
3. In the “Streaming Proxy Settings” area, select “MMS”, then click “Configure” button below.
4. Click the radio button next to “Use the following proxy server”.
5. In the box next to “Address”, input the IP address of the proxy server. Click “OK” button.
6. Repeat Steps 3-5 for “RTSP”.
7. Click “Apply” or “OK”.

c) Other Items

1. For the IT Department: If there are firewalls or proxy servers, please open port 80 to http://www.naxosmusiclibrary.com.  Proper proxy configuration on the end users’ browsers must also be set.
